Water Crisis

Drought in Firebaugh,Ca?? What?!?!

Welcome to my blog. I am very excited to talk to you guys about this terrible drought in a small town named Firebaugh. This drought is causing a lot of workers around the area to lose their jobs and many farmers having to sell their land because they do not have enough water to farm. It does not only affect the workers, it affects the whole town. Prices are going up at the time, and we really can't do anything about it. So this means we all have to start saving water.

Whats wrong with the economy in Firebaugh??

Flood in Firebaugh, Ca 1997
In 1997 there was a horrible flood in Fireabaugh Ca. Now there is a drought? This year the news says there will be a flood in the flood zone, and that is where Firebaugh is located. But there are no signs of rain so how will that be possible? The weather at this time is very bipolar. Well if there is no raining at this time of the year, it could be made up for later on. If it starts to rain during the summer it will be just a big mess. The whole agricultural system would be off, and that is not what we want. We want our crops to grow healthy and normal. If it starts raining during the summer, the crops will get over flooded with water and not grow like they're supposed to. Hopefully the water shortage in Firebaugh gets better. No water equals no jobs which equals no food. Therefore, that means no healthy nor happy families.

So some people filter their water which isn't too cheap. So water can also cost a lot these days. There are a number of  ways to save water, and they all start with you.

What is an OLLA?

What is an olla?

An olla is an unglazed clay pot fired at a low temperature. This causes the pot to remain porous. The olla is buried in ground with neck exposed and periodically filled with water. The water seeps into the soil at a rate that provides adjacent plants with a constant water source at the roots. An olla is a good way to save water.
Here is a video of how we made our own olla:
